Please do not take any of my comments personal. Just having some fun with it. We should always respect where we are and the people around us. I often will change in my Honda Element in the back seat where no one can see me or my privates.

Likewise, I come in peace and post in fun. Small southern towns are usually very conservative and folks are private....and don't wish to view some stranger's privates, especially on Sunday Goo To Meeting morning. And like Nealy said, we're viewed as something akin to devil worshippers.

I think one of the reasons John Mason got the hell outta there was he was sick of being the go between for the "Quaker village types" and the "semi-nude hackey-sacking with open containers types".

There are a lot of tough guys in the boating scene down there. Changing under a robe instead of letting it all hang out would certainly be viewed as a sign of weakness on par with running left at National!

Seems like people here are pretty spot-on.

For anyone heading to Friendsville in the near future, it's probably best to avoid Water Street (the road on river left near the take out) altogether, and park on the main strip.

Friendsville is what it is.

The Upper Yough is a gem.

Happy summer boating to everyone,

Alden

Hey riverfunk whats wrong with the left line at national? Having run it every which way over the years thats the way I'm heading. My most exciting route was hand paddling the falls - no not on purpose - but it was a hell of a surf!

Does that means you paddled it with only your hands, as opposed to using hand paddles? I expect that could be exciting in far easier places.

Hey gray beard, nothing at all. I was implying that the vultures on the rocks tend to boo left lines and that the local badasses and the raft guide goon squad generally only approve of the left line if you are in a race boat. Right at Tommy's and the Rifle Barrel @Heinzerling also can elicit scoffs from these hardcore types. It is all about doing the coolest thing you could possibly be doing at any given rapid.

My beard isn't grey yet, but I've mellowed. I couldn't care less about people's line choices, or how discreet they choose to be when changing clothes. But the National boof can be pretty sweet!!!

Well scagrotto, I lost my paddle above National and was pinned briefly then let my hands do the rest - no hand paddles- I have been very lucky hand paddling over the years and have always "made the eddy" even in class V in flood!

It is the request of the local population that you DON'T change in public. Robe or not, use the free changing booth and maybe it won't turn into an issue.
