I'm looking for a public beach that you can bring kayaks in the water in CT or RI.

My wife wants to go to the beach with the kids and I'm not much of a "sit there and sun" type of person. It has to have some nice sandy areas for the kids.

CT or RI (maybe even NY) would be best. Of course, we want some waves, so water like Rocky Neck won't work.

Any pointers would be great.

Jay, I asked the same question about 2 weeks ago (see Surf paddling forum). My wife wasn't up to the trip so we haven't gone yet but the suggestion I got from Rojo was East Matunuck Beach in R.I. I did a little research and though you can't paddle from the state part of the beach you can walk a little ways and put in just off the beach. There is a feature called "Deep hole" that is supposed to be a good spot. I was warned by another paddler that there may be "friction" with other people who want to surf there though. Another suggestion was "Long Sands Beach" which I was told was in the lower part of Maine. I haven't tried surf paddling yet and am anxious to go,so let me know what you find.
Thanks,
Al P

Jay, it will be interesting to see what other suggestions you get. The best way to avoid friction with surfers is to share and know the etiquette.

GMK gave me the "Ocean Mist" as the landmark to find the place we were talking about. I think it might be the same place Mr. P is talking about. If that is the case, Mr. P, from what I'm talk, surfers play on "this side" and kayakers play on "that side".

Same place. Bing map Ocean Ave and Matunuck Beach Rd in Wakefield, RI. The hole break is best suited for yaks and the beach break for boards but it is all fair game. Rocks, sand, crabs, snails, and ocean. Ahhh. I use wunderground for forecasts.

I was there this morning .....you guys now have a connection down here. Recent friction in another RI break caused a whole bunch of shit w/ local boarders and cops. Rules are rules, the surf thing IS DIFFERENT, but with Duke Wavewalker along for the session, you'll have no problems! LOL! ROJO is also a good man for the job. We're locals.......and LOCALS RULE!!! the best break in Ri is not what is said here. there is another place that is the most secretive of all the ri spots. kinda off limits but there is a legal access as long as you know it. i'd rather not say here, and it is a little off the beaten path, but it is AWESOME. all i will say is that it is south of the normal areas, and has an unusual community around it, but not really. if you want to know contact me when the surf is coming in and i would be happy to show you. FYI, if there is a crazy fun freestyle surf move, it can be done there, and if the duke man doesn't know what what i am talking about i would be shocked.

HINT!!! you have to follow the DUNE to find it.

Deep Hole is a great place to go. Not the best beach, but I've never had any friction with the locals. Don't hog the waves, throw a few wave wheels to entertain the locals, maybe a hand roll or to, and you'll be like the little brother with special needs. They will be buying YOU beers...

I have never had anything worse than a dirty look from a boardie at Matunuk. Atleast at the Deep Hole side of the beach. A little different vibe over by Point Judith area. Still over all I have never actually had any troubles other than a little atitiude.
