Someone looked at the data!

"A top U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service official says a 45-year effort to restore Atlantic salmon to the Connecticut River is being abandoned."

"In 2010 Fish and Wildlife stocked around 6 million tiny fry and 75,000 to 90,000 larger salmon smolts throughout the Connecticut River estuary at a cost of about $2 million. This spring about 50 adult salmon returned to the Connecticut to spawn in the tributaries where they were released, Archambault said."

PS, that’s $40,000 per fish people!

Ok… thinking about it… For .5 Million / year, I will provide shuttle service for at least 500 salmon from the ocean to the designated coordinates. I’m submitting a bid, I’ll let you know in 45 years if it worked!

Wow, interesting article. I can’t believe how long this process has gone on. A noble attempt, but in the end I hope that we can develop a more broad-minded approach to the operation of the Ball Mountain Dam and the stewardship of the West River.

You mean they can’t blame the WW kayaker for the demise of the Atlantic Salmon restocking program? …What a surprise! Why don’t they ask the European fisherman …the ones taking the stocked salmon…how this will impact them…no wonder we don’t have a replenished fishery.True the placement of dams killed off this fishery, but measures were taken to get around some of the dam problem…but you need SALMON to have a salmon fishery. Now what is the next issue to throw at the towns and the recreationalists to not have releases of a flood control dam?…too much rise and fall of the river level will hurt the trout’s fins from swimming?…

Well, it’s good to read Chuck’s e mail that they are still going to have a release at the end of this month. It is sad, though after a 45 year effort, there are still no salmon in the Salmon Hole.At the very least there are still white water kayakers using the same river that the fish used to use.For a while, things looked like the kayaker was going the way of the salmon…
