sorry, forgot to login before i posted…

Does anyone (possiblly from Jersey) paddle the Rockaway? possibly advise on a good put-in / Take out. The American Whitewater site mentions that you risk a run-in with the law if you decide to float out into the res.

any advice, good playspots (are there any?) or anyone who wants to come run it with me?

I’m from the Denville/Rockaway area, unfortunately I just started kayaking so I’m probably not the guy to go with, but I can tell you that Edward Gertler does a great write-up of the river in "Garden State Canoeing." If you can’t get a copy let me know and I’ll scan the pages and email them to you. The short story is, there’s good spots and not good spots but it depends a lot on the rain. Just from being around I can tell you in my area the water can get waist deep and fast or ankle deep where you can walk across the river like nothing. There’s a lot of factors to consider. Let me know if you need more info, if you go post a trip report if it’s a nice local spot to get out on.
