The dam at Schaghticoke, NY on the Hoosic River suspended their recreational releases a few years ago. After some negotiation we've managed to get a whitewater release date for this year. Right now we're scheduled for April 22nd from 1PM to 4PM. If we can get 25 or more paddlers for this event then the FERC license gives us more releases next year, so please share this info with your paddling groups!

There is something here for everyone:
-- Class V: There is a class V and class IV drop right at the top for those looking.
-- Class III: You can walk right past the class V and put in at "The Big Eddy" for a 1.25 mile class III run.
-- Class I-II: You can put in at the powerhouse and run 5.5 miles of flatwater, class I, and possible class II to the Hudson River.
-- You can combine the above runs as desired for a paddle of around 7 miles.

You can find more information on the hardest sections (including a map) on American Whitewater here:
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/1320

And a facebook event has been created here:

If you live a long way away, I still encourage you to come and make a weekend out of it! There are a TON of good New York runs within an hour drive if you want to come and spend the weekend. I highly recommend the Schroon from the Starbuckville dam. It's about 7 miles of good class II and III whitewater. There are also several good runs on the upper Hudson (anywhere from class II to class V) and the Sacandaga.

Hope to see you all there!

A couple exciting updates about the release on the Hoosic River. First, the release time has been confirmed for Saturday April 22nd from 1pm - 4pm.

Secondly, the operators of Lock 4 State Park have graciously agreed to allow access to anyone paddling the class I-II section below the Hoosic Gorge. This means we can park and take-out at the park right after the last rapids.

We still need 25 paddlers, so please get everyone out who you can muster!

Thanks for the great photos! Wish I could have been there to see the action. I'm barely a class 3 paddler though. Glad to see the release happened and you had serious boaters. And thanks to all those who worked to make it happen. I hope to get more local boaters to the next release as long as I know when it is. Strong work everyone !thmbup4
