Dennis Squires and another paddler were on the Waikaia River in New Zealand on Saturday. The other paddler ran a drop first and waited at the bottom–couldn’t see the top. When Dennis’s paddle floated down, he ran back upstream but saw no sign of Dennis. After searching as best he could, he then paddled out for help.

A major search and rescue operation, including up to 60 people, has been underway since 6 pm Saturday. Helicopters with search devices turned up nothing. Two dive teams went in and searchers are still scouring the bush. The dive teams did not find Dennis or his boat at the drop where he disappeared. They did find an elbow pad and it belongs to Dennis.

It has been raining and the river is still rising at this point. The dive teams need to wait for the water to drop.

Dennis quickly endeared himself to the Kiwis and fellow boaters that he met in his travels of New Zealand. They have searched with every available resource. We would like to thank them for their continued efforts.

This is all we know at this point, but will post further information as it becomes available.
We have not given up hope. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with Dennis.

Mike – Thanks for posting this information about Dennis.

Many of us know that he has been through some very harrowing paddling experiences before. Let’s all hope this is just another tale for his next book.

If anyone else has information please post it.

Here is some selected text from some news items, and their links:

…In Southland a kayaker from the United States was missing after he became separated from a companion while paddling a whitewater stretch of the Waikaia River on Saturday. A helicopter search of the area was started that night and search and rescue teams were yesterday combing the area for signs of him, Senior sergeant Paul Crosswell, of the Invercargill police, said….

…The Otago Daily Times reports on two river tragedies in the lower South Island. In the first: an Australian, 45, was swept away in front of his children in the Matukituki River near Wanaka. In the other incident; The ODT says an American kayaker is presumed dead after becomming trapped under rapids in the Waikaia River in Southland….

…Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail, of Invercargill, said the 49-year-old man was kayaking with a Japanese companion on grade five rapids under the Canton Bridge, north of Piano Flat, about 70km north of Gore, when disaster struck about 3pm on Saturday. “The Japanese man lost sight of his companion and the only thing he could locate was a paddle, which he left on a rock.”…

Dennis is a pioneer for us boaters. I was helping (best I could) him with information for his creek books. All we can do is wish for the best.

peace,

James

I want to believe that this will turn into one of his improbable (but true) survival stories, and fodder for his next book.
